The Shelf Smithy
From a small craft business to an industrial enterprise: Julius vom Hofe, based in Lüdenscheid, manufactures sheet steel storage systems that reflect the high standards of the company’s origins as an artisan blacksmith shop. A success story of industrialization and a perfect fit for the MAGAZIN product line—the storage rack was one of our first products.
From the very beginning, the Julius vom Hofe company has been all about metal: Since 1863, the family-run business in the Sauerland region has been forging ornate railings and staircases, primarily custom-made pieces. In other words, a classic 19th-century craft workshop. The fact that the artisanal blacksmith shop evolved into a diversified industrial enterprise is due in no small part to the vom Hofe family’s ability to recognize market needs and seize those opportunities. Today, Hofe manufactures sophisticated shelving and storage systems. The high standards of the former artistic blacksmiths are still evident: The shelving units are sturdier and better balanced than their mass-produced counterparts. This is certainly due to the precise design, the carefully selected high-quality materials, and the superior craftsmanship. But it’s also because Hofe has developed a keen instinct for metalworking. You can see that. And that’s exactly why Hofe shelving fits so well with the “ MAGAZIN ” concept: bringing industry specialists—in this case, shelving systems originally developed for warehouses—into the home. The warehouse shelving unit is one of the products from the very beginning of MAGAZIN and is also featured by the dozen as display furniture in our stores.

The iconic piece among shelving units: The steel shelf made of perforated angle profiles and folded-edge steel shelves was, in its day, brought from warehouses into private homes by MAGAZIN —a small revolution.

Here we offer the REGAL INDUSTRIE in a half-height version. This makes it ideal for the living room as a piece of furniture that complements the existing decor. Three of the four shelves have an upstand at the back to keep books and other items secure. The top shelf has no upstand and is therefore flat.
