Thinking loop
A practical challenge, a passion for the perfect solution and the tenacity to persevere in the face of adversity - these are the ingredients for a very good product. The sanding machines from Swedish manufacturer Tormek are the best example of this: more or less by accident, a private hobby became a globally renowned brand.
Sharpening the blunt edges of his tools - that was the original wish of hobby carpenter and mechanical engineer Torgny Jansson. He didn't think it would turn into a global company - but it was in the air: Ever since he watched his father sharpen his axe as a boy, Torgny had been fascinated by the perfect grind - the interrelationships between angle of attack, pressure and torque. However, the search for a suitable grinder for his tool was unsuccessful - he built it himself. With success. His machine was simple but ingenious and delivered a convincing result: a grinding stone made of natural stone, driven by the drill, the rotation throttled by a rubber disk. That was in the early 1970s. He recognized the potential, applied for a patent and threw himself into product development: shape, materials and technical details were thought through and perfected again and again. The goal: the repeatable, perfect cut that anyone can achieve. With a stop, its own drive, a diamond grinding wheel and the best industrial design, the machines specialized for different tools found more and more grateful customers. Since the introduction of the T-1, this has also included private enthusiasts of well-sharpened kitchen blades. And this is where they stand today: very good machines, conceived, brought to success and still manufactured in Lindesberg in Sweden.
