General Information
We prepare our food in a Japanese or German way, take inspiration from our food in Italy or the Levant - Eastern and Western eating habits converge and form a diverse mix. The diversity of ingredient preparation worlds should also be reflected in the tools on the table, classic formats of vessels, plates, cups and bowls should be rethought!
This program was the starting point for product designer Stefan Diez and architect Andrea Lenardin when designing new tableware for the German porcelain manufacturer Schönwald. Diez, with his expertise and in-depth knowledge of porcelain as a material and the associated formal possibilities, and Lenardin, as an experienced designer and consultant to the catering industry, developed SHIRO ("white" in Japanese), a tableware series that comprehensively meets these changing habits and the resulting requirements. Shapes and sizes, plates, platters and bowls are in perfect proportion to each other and invite you to mix and match as required. The powerful, rather thick-walled shapes are as delicate as they are robust and suitable for everyday use. They are ideal for use in the catering trade or in everyday family life.
Each piece is made from hard porcelain in Schönwald in the Upper Palatinate, a traditional region for this craft. In terms of durability and resistance to breakage and scratching, these pieces are second to none. This is because Schönwald hard porcelain has enjoyed a good reputation in the catering trade for more than 100 years. It is characterized by very high edge impact resistance and scratch resistance of the glaze. A sophisticated - and secret - recipe and composition of kaolin, quartz and feldspar, fired at over 1400 °C, produces porcelain of outstanding quality.
