General Information

These prints from 1965 to 1973 are part of Josef Albers' groundbreaking Homage to the Square series, and his two-decade-long exploration of the interaction of color. Comprising over two thousand works, the series is his most influential artistic achievement. With its mathematically arranged concentric squares in different hues, it continues to have a fundamental influence on color theory and art education today. These prints were created in close collaboration with the Josef & Anni Albers Foundation to honor the legacy of one of the most influential figures of 20th century modernism. Intensive efforts were made to reproduce the colors, design and appearance of the original as accurately as possible during the reproduction process. Hence the small stains and inclusions on the motif, which were deliberately retained in order to preserve the authenticity of the original artwork.

Josef Albers

Born in Bottrop in 1888, the painter and designer Josef Albers was one of the influential personalities at the Bauhaus, where he also worked as a teacher after completing his own studies. After the Bauhaus was closed down by the National Socialist regime, Albers emigrated to the USA together with his wife Anni Albers, who also worked at the Bauhaus, where he first taught at the newly founded Black Mountain College and later at the renowned Yale University, where he had a lasting influence on American art.
