Pines renew their needles every 3 to 8 years: They shed the old needles and new ones grow back. As a result, the ground around the large trees is often covered with countless needles. Sometimes the needles fall onto a forest path, sometimes they cover the surface of a nearby lake or, depending on the season, they land on a thick blanket of snow.
