General Information
"High design for a modest object" was the headline of the New York Times Home Section on February 16, 1995. It was commenting on the latest design by Philippe Starck in collaboration with the US company Heller: a toilet brush called EXCALIBUR. True to its name, the design uses the shape semantics of a scallop to protect the hand doing the cleaning work and to take a tongue-in-cheek approach to this everyday object, which is often viewed with disapproval. Starck himself comments on his commission at the time as follows: "I always thought that this would be the apotheosis of my career, because designing a toilet brush is the most modest achievement I can make. We worked very seriously on a vision with humility and whimsy and created a useful and timeless product that still serves its purpose with pride, elegance and playfulness thirty years later." This new edition of EXCALIBUR honors the original, iconic design of the toilet brush, which is still part of the permanent collection of renowned art museums such as MoMA and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The new version is now made from 100% recycled polypropylene (PCR).
