Kelsch. Old Alsatian tradition
Traditionally woven in plain weave, this checked fabric was once part of every rural household in Alsace. Its name "Kelsch" sounds quite "Kölsch" and actually comes from the Cologne area: the yarns used to make the fabric were dyed with vegetable dyes from Cologne, including "Kölnisch Blau". The Alsatians mainly used linen for their Kelsch fabrics and made them into kitchen towels, hand towels, table and bed linen. We have the fabric rewoven with a black check in an Austrian weaving mill and made up into this tea towel in Poland. You will also find table linen and a kitchen apron made from the same Kelsch fabric in our range.
