The background: In the early days of mining, these little yellow songbirds went underground and saved the lives of many a miner. That’s because birds react much more quickly to rising levels of life-threatening carbon monoxide. If the feathered companion grew quiet and tired—or even fell from its perch—it was time to act quickly and make the ascent to safer air.

BIRDIE carries on the work of these little birds and pays tribute to their efforts in an elegant way: When hung in the living room, bedroom, or children’s room, the built-in precision sensor—manufactured in Switzerland—continuously measures the air quality in the room. If the air quality is good, the stylized canary-yellow bird sits upright; if the CO₂ level rises too high, it tips upside down. This signals that oxygen is needed and the windows should be opened immediately. When the CO₂ level then drops and air quality improves, the bird rights itself and sits cheerfully in place.
