This principle, already known to 19th-century miners, serves as the inspiration for the BIRDIE indoor air monitor, ensuring good air quality and a steady supply of oxygen in your living space. The background: In the early days of mining, these little yellow songbirds went underground and saved the lives of many a miner. That’s because birds react much more quickly to rising levels of life-threatening carbon monoxide. If the feathered companion grew quiet and tired—or even fell from its perch—it was time to act quickly and make a way up to safer air.

BIRDIE carries on the work of these little birds and pays tribute to their dedication in an elegant way: When hung in the living room, bedroom, or children’s room, the built-in precision sensor—manufactured in Switzerland—continuously measures the air quality in the room. If the air quality is good, the stylized canary-yellow bird sits upright; if the CO₂ level rises too high, it tips upside down. This signals that oxygen is needed and the windows should be opened immediately. When the CO₂ level then drops and air quality improves, the bird rights itself and sits cheerfully in place.

Unlike its counterparts from the mining industry, BIRDIE is powered by a rechargeable battery. It has a runtime of up to six months and is charged via USB-C. Made of plastic or, in the wooden version, oak.
