Bath mat birch wood

Nine neatly trimmed and finely sanded strips of birch wood have been made into this simple, yet beautiful, foot mat. The edges of the strips have been rounded top and bottom so that the water drains off well and does not stay on the wood (and the mat can be turned when required). The birch wood strips are held together with a rope which is not made of plastic as is often the case with similar products, but completely natural, and made from hemp and flax. To make the natural material durable and resistant to moisture and humidity, the finished rope is soaked in tree resin. Initially, the rope has a slightly resinous odour, but this diminishes with time. The birch wood is oiled.
The birch wood foot mats are made by Swedish craft business Iris Hantverk. Of the 14 employees hired by the small workshop, five are visually impaired. Iris Hantverk also cooperates with an Estonian association for the blind.
