Egon Eiermann - architect and designer
Egon Fritz Wilhelm Eiermann, born in Neuendorf near Berlin in 1904, is considered one of the most important German architects of post-war modernism. His residential buildings from the 1930s, the handkerchief weaving mill in Blumberg in 1951, St. Matthew's Church in Pforzheim in 1953, the German Pavilion at the World Exhibition in Brussels in 1958, the new Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin in 1961, the German Embassy in Washington in 1964, the high-rise parliament building in Bonn in 1969 and the administration buildings for IBM and Olivetti in Stuttgart and Frankfurt in 1970 are among his most important buildings.Eiermann was a full professor at the Faculty of Architecture at the Technical University in Karlsruhe, where he ran his own architectural practice and also designed numerous pieces of furniture during this time. These included his archetypal tubular steel table frame in 1953, with whose reduced construction Eiermann - coming from the field of architecture - found the optimum combination of material use and stability. Designed as a work table that could not be dismantled, the original served as the basis for various further developments. In 1965, for example, a demountable version with a decentrally mounted and vertically aligned cross was created, followed later by a version that can also be used as a dining table and a small version for children by manufacturer Richard Lampert and in exchange with Eiermann's descendants.
